UNILORIN REJECTS TERRORIST TAG

The attention of the management of the University of Ilorin has been drawn to media publications on Monday in which our peace-loving and pace-setting University was described as a “terrorist organisation” by the University of Ibadan Branch Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Ayodeji Omole.
This is unfortunate, especially coming from someone who is expected to know the gravity of such appellation.
While the University is not ready to join issues with this fellow, who appears hell bent to drag the good names that Unilorin has made for itself over the years, in the mud, we want to make it abundantly clear that the disciplinary action recently taken by the University against two of its staff, which is the basis for his outburst, followed due process and it was in line with the laid down rules and regulations as contained in the University’s Conditions of Service.
We wonder when an internal affair of the University of Ilorin has now become the business of the University of Ibadan ASUU Chairman. We recall that this is the same fellow that recently alleged that the University of Ilorin had increased its tuition fees and shamefacedly took the false news to the media.
As a supposed senior member of the academia, we expect Dr Omole to be circumspect in his usage of words. How can you describe a University that is the toast of most Nigerian parents and the darling of admission seekers as a terrorist organisation?
The University of Ilorin is proud of its records of achievement as the most peaceful university in the country with an unbroken record of stable academic calendar and an unmatched expansion of academic programmes. These are attributes that have made the University the most sought after institution of higher learning in the country since 2013.
Surely, an institution like this that is actively promoting the nation’s educational ideals and fostering peace and stability cannot be rightly described as a terrorist organisation, except perhaps, Omole has a new definition for the word!

Kunle Akogun
Head, Corporate Affairs
University of Ilorin.

THE NEW JAMB CENTRAL ADMISSION PROCESSING SYSTEM(CAPS)

JAMB in it's policy meeting in August introduced a new system of admission called CENTRAL ADMISSION PROCESSING SYSTEM (CAPS), This CAPS addresses the issue of human interference in the admission process giving everyone equal chance of admission.
According to JAMB public relations officer Dr Fabian Benjamin who made this known, the Board had held consultations with universities across the country to enable candidates meet the requirement and secure admission without the assistance of anybody.
“The Prof. Oloyede led management is working to ensure transparent, acceptable and fair admission process.
“We have designed a software known as Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), where human interference will be completely removed, to promote credibility.
“The admission criteria would be keyed into the software and it will select candidates blindly according to the institutions requirement without any primordial consideration.” He stated.
How does this CAPS Work?
According to JAMB, the new CAPS is a market place where institutions can go and request for students who meet their cut off mark.
These institutions will write a letter to JAMB to request for students and also give the students up to 3 days to reply.
The new policy will also give the academic board or senate of an institution the power to ‘allocate percentages to JAMB, the school and O’level results as these will be calculated to get the students’ cut off marks for post-UTME.’
If you reject the admission, your profile and details becomes available in the market place for other institutions that can accept the qualification you have for the course you intend to study to offer you admission.
Once a candidate accepts his or her admission such candidate no longer has the privilege to reject the admission and be scouted by other institutions in the market place.
There has been different reactions from aspirants of various institutions about this new development. According to Hamzat Mubaraq an aspirant of medicine and surgery university of Ilorin, he believes JAMB is making the wrong decision and that this is not the right time for JAMB to introduce the CAP SYSTEM.
In his word "I just want you to know that prof Oloyede is making the wrong decision, He knows dat Nigeria is still battling with series of problems and this is not d right time to bring CAPS He should leave d process  for d handle universities to handle it themselves". In another interview with miss oluwatofunmi an aspirant of UNIOSUN she believes the new central admission processing system (CAPS) will favour many aspirants, in her words "in my own opinion I think its favourable and it will help a lot of jambites because if the institution you chose did not give you your course of choice you have the right to accept or reject it and if the candidate reject the offer, then such candidate will be put in the market place if any institution have interest in the candidate they can give him/her admission into their school"
With this new JAMB CAP system we just hope fairness is brought back to the admission process in Nigeria so that the days of who knows who and not what you score will be finally over.

JAMB introduces new central admission processing system to curb ‘under the table admission’

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on Thursday said the newly Introduced Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS, would restore autonomy of Institutions and also curb what it calls ‘under the table admission’ that was common in the past.
The Registrar of the Board, Ishaq Oloyede said this in Abuja during a Training and Sensitisation Forum on Central Admissions Processing system, CAPS, for 2017/2018 Academic Session.
The CAPs according to the board will ensure that candidates are fairly treated, expend admission opportunities as well as protect academic calendar.
Oloyede identified lack of adequate space in Nigeria’s Tertiary Institutions as the reason why the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, would be necessary because of lack of enough space in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
He emphasized that JAMB is a ranking body and not an examination conducting body like West Africa Examinations Council, WAEC, National Examinations Council, NECO and National Business and Technical Examinations Board, NABTEB.
Oloyede condemned the “Under the table admission” decrying situations where Institutions admit above stipulated capacity.
“JAMB is a ranking body not an examination body like WAEC and NECO, JAMB is to rank and to screen already qualified candidates, emphatically pass or fail is not the focus of any ranking body”.
The Registrar stressed that it is not the board that qualifies a candidate but examination bodies and JAMB is not a certificate awarding institution.
“If there are enough spaces in our Tertiary Institutions there may be no need to conduct UTME”, he said.
Oloyede emphasized that Ordinary or Advanced level results are key qualifying requirements for admissions and that the board will not consider any candidates unless qualified by A/ O levels.
Speaking on the 2017/2018 Cut Off Marks, Oloyede explained stakeholders picked 120,110 and 100 respectively for Universities and other Institutions as threshold below which no Institutions can admit candidates.
The Registrar noted that scoring higher than the required Cut off mark does not guarantee admission but makes candidates eligible for Admission consideration.
“The cut off mark is not fail or pass mark, it is not total score but one of the many factors that will be used for admission such as Post-UTME (where applicable),” he noted.
Oloyede identified China, Iran, Republic of Georgia, Spain, and Turkey as countries of the world that share similarities with Nigeria in the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Board.
The training is to empower stakeholders in enhancing efficiency.

The university of Ilorin post utme screening is on its day 4 after the exam started on Monday 11th of September and it will come to an end on the 16th September.
We want to use this medium to remind all aspirants of the Do's and Don't's of the post utme screening.
As we know that the university of Ilorin is strict when it comes to dress code, we have heard stories of students who put on trousers (female), sleeveless tops, crazy jeans, or gown above the knees being sent back to dress well and you won't have choice but to rent wrapper outside the gate for those in Lagos center.
It will also be pertinent to note that unilorin doesn't condone any form of crazy hairstyles like gallas, afro or unkempt hairs. So to be on a safer side just make sure your hair is on low cut. Also forms of sagging or short nicker is not allowed, face cap is also not allowed and you won't be allowed to take Biro, calculators or your wrist watch into the exam hall, also your cellphones will also not be allowed we will advise you drop your cellphones and other valuables at home to avoid theft or any form of implications but if you must take your phones then you will have to give it to some people who are at the gate to safeguard it for you at a price of #100.
Now enough of dress codes issue let's talk about the exam in itself.
We advice that you get to the center an hour before the exam because even if you are scheduled to write your exam by 10am you might write the exam before 10am depending on how fast other sets finish doing theirs, and its also advisable to leave home early because of unforseen circumstances like traffic and the rest.
When you get to the center you will required to line up according to your batch then you will be searched and after which your print outs will be verified and signed on then a marker will be painted on your thumb to signified that you have been cleared to write the post utme after which you will put down your name jamb reg number and phone number on a log book before you go into the CBT hall your thumb will be checked whether it has be signed on after that you will go in to write your exam.
Now when you are inside the CBT hall you will be required to log in so as to write your post utme, your log in details is your jamb registration number and surname i.e username jamb registration number and password your surname name whether in capital letters or not when you log in your exam will be displayed on the Computer Screen.
Now on the structure of the exam, it is 50 questions for 30 minutes and it contains 40 English, 5 maths and 5 general questions (current affairs and any other questions). You need to note that the 30 minutes is not the normal 30 minutes, it reads very fast so you have to be time conscious, if you don't know the answer to a question just click any answer you think its likely to be the answer when you finish and you still have some time left then you can crosscheck again to see if its the right answer. The English questions contains questions on correct spelling, rules of concord, nearest in meanings, words with the same vowel sounds, idioms and others. Also make sure you read all instructions on every English questions because each question might have different instructions (maybe its nearest in meaning or idioms or vowel sounds).
On the mathematics questions like finding mean, median or modes of a set of given values, percentage and ratios.
On current affairs questions like What is the name of the immediate past INEC  chairman (prof Atthairu jega)
What is the capital of China? (Beijing) and the rest.
After you finish the exam click on submit and leave the exam hall, the results are always out by evening around 4pm or 5pm.
