JAMB Policy Meeting to Decide 2018 Admission Cut-Off holds on June 26th

We're pleased to announce thhat the Admission Policy Meeting, with JAMB, the Minister of Education and all stakeholders in the sector, has been scheduled to hold on 26th June, 2018.

In the meeting, crucial 2018 admission guidelines, including the determination of the official 2018 Admission Cut-off Marks for various institutions will be determined.
Mr. Fabian Benjamin, the head of Media for JAMB had cautioned institutions that advertised admission into their schools before this meeting, stating that they had breached the constitutional guidelines for admissions. He stated that “a  list of institutions that breached this rule are being compiled by the board and to be forwarded to the appropriate body for sanction.”

He added that institutions planning to advertise admission before this policy meeting, should suspend such actions, pointing out that the policy meeting is being held early enough in the year to allow plenty of time for schools to conclude the 2018/2019 Admissions on time.

As it stands, all attention has been focused on June 26th for the official release of Cut-Off Marks for 2018 Admission.

“We have been producing the editorial for so many years. We update it as we get information across the country that some institutions are operating illegally. We go there and once they know we are coming, they run away,” Mr Yakasai said.
PREMIUM TIMES reported how the NUC confirmed that a senator, Foster Ogola’sPhd certificate is invalid; as the institution he attended is among the illegal universities.
An investigation revealed that the senator, currently representing Bayelsa West senatorial district, has fake credentials from an unaccredited university in Nigeria named GMF Christian university.
The National Universities Commission of Nigeria is a government agency promoting quality higher education in Nigeria.
The commission is saddled with the responsibility of granting approval for all academic programs run in Nigerian universities and granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programs.

NUC releases names of universities approved for post-graduate programmes (FULL LIST)

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a list of approved post-graduate awarding institutions in Nigeria.

The commission said it observed that some Nigerian universities are running unapproved post-graduate programmes, leading to the award of Masters and PhD degrees.

A bulletin issued on Monday from the office of the Executive Secretary dated May 14 contains the list of federal, state and private universities currently allowed to issue such certificates to students in Nigeria.

“The commission has also observed some parastatals and institutes awarding these same postgraduate degrees, either on their own or through unapproved affiliation with Nigerian and foreign universities,” the bulletin said.

According to the commission, such practices are not only unethical, “but also antithetical to time -tested quality assurance best practices”.

“The commission hereby notifies the general public that only the following universities have approval to offer postgraduate programmes at the Masters’ and Ph.D levels in Nigeria as of July 30,2012,” the bulletin said .

The NUC Director of Information and Public Relations , Ibrahim Yakasai, in a phone interview with PREMIUM TIMES said all the ‘legal’ universities in Nigeria can actually do post-graduate courses only after meeting certain criteria and conditions of the commission.

According to him, the commission must verify that the institutions have adequate resources which include “physical and human resources.”

“All universities can ‘graduate’ to post-graduate but the universities with approval are those that are matured, (who) applied and have met the requirement and they’ve been allowed to do post-graduate. So, we published the names of the universities who have met the conditions,” he said.

Similarly, an official of the commission who pleaded anonymity explained that there is a document called Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS ).

According to the source, the document contains all the minimum requirements before a particular programme or school can be approved or accredited.

“One of the quality assurances of NUC, is to conduct a resource verification of any programme. The commission must go out there to find out whether the particular institution has the minimum number of academic staff that will enable the programme run.

“If they have the minimum required space for students to be admitted into the programme, do they have laboratories, well-equipped libraries and other amenities to make the students comfortable?” the source said.

JAMB sets date for rescheduled examinations for over 12,000 candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said it had set May 26 for rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for more than 12,000 candidates across the country.
The Board’s Head of Media, Fabian Benjamin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
According to Mr Benjamin, more than 12,000 candidates are expected to sit for the mop up examinations in few of its centres across the country.
This category of candidates, he explained, are those whose biometrics were not captured during the initial period of the UTME in March.
He said: “It would also include those, who are yet to see their results since the end of the examinations in March till date and have not been involved in any form of malpractice.”
“It will also include those, who were unable to print out their e-slip before the earlier examinations and those whose centres were cancelled for suspected malpractices.’’
According to him, “there are centres that were cancelled because of suspicious activities but the board was unable to identify the actual culprits.
However, he said that those, who were involved and caught in illicit acts and centres where a case of malpractice has been established against them would not partake in the rescheduled examinations.
He advised candidates who might have fallen into any of the categories qualified for the examination to print their e-slips from Monday, May 21.
NAN recalls the board had earlier promised to reschedule the examinations for some candidates whose cases were exceptional, adding that candidates, who fall under such categories would be contacted before then.

The officials of IRS, led by Mr Oladipo Babatunde arrived the campus at exactly 7:00am, and went straight to lock the main entrance to the campus, popularly called Road 1, and the gate to the Senate Building, including the administrative block and the bursary office.
Confirming the closure to DAILY POST, the Public Relations Officer(PRO) of the school, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju said officials of the tax office had locked the main gate to the campus and other offices.
He said the University was already discussing with the Osun State Government to see how the issue could be resolved.
“We just discovered that tax officials have locked our main entrance gate and the administrative block.
“We are already speaking with Osun State government , and hope to resolve it soonest,” Olanrewaju said.
DAILY POST recalls that the state government had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum to private and public organisations who have outstanding tax to upset.
